Statement

Based on the readings of this unit, your personal research, and your own understanding, create an infographic to attach in the Discussion Forum. Address the following areas with the infographic:

  1. How can one maintain their emotions?
  2. How can you manage stress and build resiliency?
  3. How do we cultivate emotional balance and control impulses?

Answer

Introduction

An emotion is a complex psychological state that involves 4 components: subjective experience, expression, cognitive appraisal, and physiological response. Experience is the cause or the stimulus that triggers the emotion. Expression is the way the emotion is displayed verbally or non verbally. Cognitive appraisal is the interpretation of the emotion or analyzing the situation using conscious thought. Physiological response is the automatic physical reaction to the emotion (Scarbrough, 2023).

How can one maintain their emotions?

To control your emotions, you need to attack the different components of the emotion. First, you need to recognize the emotion and identify the cause; maybe avoiding the trigger can help. Second, delay the expression until your conscious mind prepares a thoughtful response; techniques like deep breathing, counting, or sensory grounding can help (Lebow, 2020). Third, after the situation has ended, you need to be mindful of yourself by not analyzing and regretting the past too much and accepting your emotions. Finally, you need to manage your physiological response by eating and sleeping well, exercising, and irritating your senses.

How can you manage stress and build resiliency?

“Resilience is the ability to adjust to change and adapt to difficult situations” (Healix, 2023). Stress is caused by lack of flexibility and adaptability; hence, resilience and managing stress go hand in hand. However, the way to manage stress and build resilience is personal and what works for one person may not work for another.

To build resilience, you can do a few things. First, maintain a long-term physical health by exercising and delaying aging consequences. Second, maintain a healthy social state by connecting with others and ensuring a support group of trusted people. Third, maintain a healthy mental state by meditation and connecting to nature. Fourth, maintain an organized schedule using planning and time management. Finally, maintain life usefulness by advancing your career and learning new skills (Healix, 2023).

How do we cultivate emotional balance and control impulses?

Impulses are the strong automatic actions triggered by strong emotions; they can be positive or negative. Maintaining emotional balance and avoiding strong emotional fluctuations can help in predicting the intensity of the next impulse and therefore, planning ahead. To cultivate emotional balance, you need to be on track or within a plan at all times, that is, time management, goal settings, financial stability, and physical health. Educating yourself and doing self-reflection or journalling can also help (Schroeder, 2024).

The infographic is attached below; it summarizes the above points in a visual format. I like infographic that are simple, less text, no images, and a few colors. Hence, the following infographic is designed in that way.
