DA6.

Statement

Part 1:

  • Write a SINGLE-SENTENCE example of each of the four types of knowledge as they directly describe something in your life you believe to be true. Number them 1-4. For example:
  • “___ is true based on intuitive knowledge.” (or) “We all believe _________ to be true based on _______ knowledge.”
  • Be creative and use challenging ideas.

Part 2:

After you’ve posted the first one (and ideally after you have had a couple of responses from others), cut and paste your 1-4 into a new post and defend your reasoning for each:

  • For Intuitive, describe why it’s obvious to you
  • For Authoritative, define why the source is an authority in your life
  • For Logical, give the reasoning you went through
  • For Empirical, explain the process of proving it

Answer

Part 1

  1. Intuitive: Regular exercise is good for mental clarity.
  2. Authoritative: The TCP/IP model is the backbone of the Internet.
  3. Logical: If I eat more calories than I burn, I will gain weight.
  4. Empirical: Ice melts into water when heated above 0°C.

Part 2

Intuitive

“Regular exercise is good for mental clarity” is true based on my personal experience; I ran for 30 minutes and then I was able to study more than I usually do without exercise. This may not be true for everyone, as lots of people do exercise and their mental clarity does not improve if they are already tired for example.

Authoritative

“The TCP/IP model is the backbone of the Internet” is true based on authoritative knowledge; I did not invent that statement; however, the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) has published literature that supports this statement. The published papers are peer-reviewed, thus, they are accepted as true.

Logical

“If I eat more calories than I burn, I will gain weight” is true based on logical knowledge; I know from my biology class that unused calories are stored as fat, thus contributing to weight gain. This is a logical conclusion based on the knowledge that I have.

Empirical

“Ice melts into water when heated above 0°C” is true based on empirical knowledge; Although the statement has been tested thousands of times, I was personally able to do the experiment and observe the ice melting when I got it out of the fridge.
